Central High School vs. Dunbar High School

The Little Rock Nine would have had to had attended Dunbar High School (one of the all black high schools in Little Rock). The buildings look exactly identical, but the classes that they offered were different. At Dunbar, one of the classes was on how to do laundry. At Central High School, they students had the option to pick from six different languages. What do you think about this difference? If you were a black student in Little Rock at the time, how would this difference influence your thinking about schools?

  1. The diffrence between the two schools is that at Dunbar they teach about Laundry and at Central High they teach diffrent languages . If I was a black student at Little Rock at the time , I would of choosen Little Rock because they would actually teach me something prductive and not teach me about chores ! I think that If I would of attended Dunbar High School I wouldn't of gotten a good education and I would not really learn anything so therefore I would not have a good job . But you also have to think about going to Central High because it was integrated and you would be suffering for your education so I think it would be a very hard decision .

  2. Based on what I know, a difference between choosing a language to learn, & a class on how to do laundry would influence which school I wanted to go to a lot. I would think schools like Dunbar didn't think they're students could go very far in life. They didn't think they could actually succed. I believe the difference is very big. Between something that could help you in life, when traveling the world, or something that can help you get maybe a part time job, when your all out of options, I would easily pick the first choice. Who wants to be completely out of options? People want to be able to have a choice, & I think Central would be the obvious choice. I'm not saying washing other people's clothing is a bad job. Any job that gets food on the table is good, but if you have the chance to be able to learn more, to go farther, why wouldn't you? Learning a different language always you to comunicate with other people, & be able to learn new things from other cultures. It could also help get you a job. Many jobs need bilingual people. I think the difference of the choices in school's like Dunbar & Central are very high, & influence my thinking about other schools a lot.

  3. If i were a little rock nine at the time i would think that Central High had better education than Dunbar High but at the same time Dunbar sounds kind of racist because their like telling us in other words that black people dont know how to do chores like for example laundry their like if their not capable of doing stuff like laundry,so what i think about the difference is that in Central their actually teaching you or showing you something new like something you will need in life to like contibue it,but in Dunbar its a waste of time in that class because your parents are the ones who teach you how to do laundry not school. So the difference is that Central High is better educated than Dunbar,So their just saying that African Americans are only worthy of doing laundry and in Central their saying that African Americans are worthy of everything including learning different languages,so in Central High School their being fair and equal and in Dunbar their arent.

if i went to little rock it would of feel weired and different because you are not use to going to a black school. But if i went to little rock i would of taken different types of languages.if i went to little rock i would of known all of different things even do i would of feel weired with all black people.

If I was a black student in Little Rock at the time I would say that central high would be better then Dunbar. At central high it would be better because they could chose form six different language. In dunbar they teach you how to do laundry and that’s a waste of time because parents could teach how to laundry so I think central high would better to go. This will influence the thinking of people because some students will forget what they learn a few minutes ago because they have to focus on laundry.

  6. I think the difference would be the more or less opportunities in the future. If I went to Central High I would learn different languages and I would have more opportunities in life (like going to different countries and having different jobs). If I went to Dunbar High I would learn how to wash clothes and I would have less opportunities in life (like when I look for a job).

  7. I think that the differences are unfair between Central High School and Dunbar High School. Everybody has the right to have a good education and learn something that will really help them in life. Learning how to do laundry at school won’t help you in life, if that was what school was about, students wouldn’t even go to school. They wouldn’t care. Students wouldn’t be motivated to do anything . If I was a black student at Little Rock at that time I would think that schools were worthless. I wouldn’t want to go to school, I wouldn’t have to. I could easily learn that at home. I would think that the schools were the most racist places, since at Central they have way better classes just because it’s a white school. If I wanted to learn something that would really help me in life, I would’ve gone to a different state because the schools here were so unfair.

I would think like Dunbar was cheaper and Central high was better because its an all white school. Dunbar was probably just for the blacks to learn stuff around the house and things like that. While Central is more advanece because it wants to teach kids on how to make them talk different languages and help them on their life around the world. If i was a black student in little rock i would atlest try to go to Central to learn more things . Dunbar would just make it look like they dont really have anything to teach.

  9. I think i would of been offended and pretty mad that they had better things than the color people. I think i would of done something like boycott or something. Why do whites always have the better thing i would of felt unspeacial like the white. While learning a broke down school not like white people learning in a nice neat shcool wit expesive things. I think it would really unfair to the blacks that there mostly nothing to learn about they were as many activities as the whites school.

  10. The difference in the schools to me is really unfair since the Dunbar High students have a lower eductaion in there classes. The students at Central have different and better courses. Why should one school give students a better education than other students from another school? Shouldn't they be equal? Race shoulnd't matter.
If I were one of the black students attending Central High the change from Dunbar High into central would have been both scary/nervous and amazing. The reasons being that i would have to learn new and a more advanced things that I might not understand having come from Dunbar. Having to speak or learn a new a language and having more classes than before, who wouldn't be scared or nervous? It would be amazing to experience new classes new languages and more things that might have not been seen in Dunbar High.

[I think that in Dunbar they won't give the same classes or apportunities because since there black they think they shouldnt be treated equally.
If i were a black kid in Central High I would right away know that were not equal.
I would probely feel angry because i wouldnt want to go to a school to learn how to do laundry thats not even going to help you later on in life. I would prefer to to learn something else that could help me later on life.

I think this differnce is unfair. I think it is unfair because at Central High students can get a much better edu8cation than at Dunbar High. If I where a student in Little Rock at the timeI would think thatwhat was the point of going to school if I wasn't even geting a good education.I wouldn't like a school that tought Laundry instead of how to speak a different language.

  13. I would think that Dunbar is a bad school with bad education. If i was at Central High i would feel lucky because all they teach in Dunbar is laundry. I would think that the Central High students are influence on the black students from Dunbar because they want to go the Central High and get teached the same.

What i think about this diffeerence is that dunbar teaching how to loundry is just a wate of time because thats not really teaching because teaching is reading, math...ect. I think central high is better because they give you a chose to pick six different languages and i think this is better because its not a waist of time. this influence of thinking beacuse laundry is not like a class beacuse that i could lurned that by my mom .

I think the dsiffrence about getting a education is that may some people wount be able to take it sirious if they know anorther school has better stuff. Like if a black is on a schopol that they thougfht is good, and than they see another school is better but they wount be able to go in cause thge color they are, that will make them think about other stuff, and wount be able to focus. Thats why i think will happend.

the difference between central and dunbar is the educational part of the schools. i asy this because in dunbar they offer a class like laundry that really doesnt matter in life. for central they offer classes for many ifferent languages which matters in life because say you are working with a company that speaks another language, you are going to need that language to assist you in life.

  17. I think that the difference between both schools are unfair. The black students might want to learn different lanuages. I would think that the schools are unfair. They are discriminating the black students. I would think that the schools were not giving the equal education. In my honest opinion I think that people were crazy back then because they were separating people for no other reason than that they were black. I also think that compared to now people would probably disagree with the goverment since they lived so different.

  18. I think that having to go to a laundry class doesn't actually count as a class because it really doesn’t help you help with your career in later life. If I were a black student I were a student it would really suck to have to go a laundry class when the white kids at central high are learning another language. If I knew another language I could be an ambassador and visit another country without having trouble communicating with the people. While a laundry class only helps you with doing laundry. The only career I could think of for is working in dry cleaners of something if knew how to do laundry. Especially it’s no use because most people already know how to do laundry like I already know how to do laundry by hand and by machine. I think if you knew another language it would benefit you much better than a laundry class if I were a black student.

The difference between both high school is that Dunbar you have no choice to do thing . Central high influence is that you had choices between six languages . If I was black ill go to central high because they have choices. Dunbar will be like hell because we are going to be cleaning and we are not goanna have no choice but to clean. I would go to central and take the judgment of the other people of different race. Black would of been hard for me because the both high school have choices but I would like to make my own.

  20. I feel that by the educational foundation not giving the same educational opportunities it must have made the black people feel less confident in their own ability and made the white people feel more supiorior than others because the get it better.Being one of the Little Rock Nine I would feel way better about my ability because if i was chosen to be one of 200 applicants to go into a white school. Im unique and am good enough to go into a school with many opportunities to be successful.

  21. which i think that little rock nine and Dunbar have differences and that they both have people that which even though they are black but that i will pike any because i know i will find risk in both schools ill just have to be ready to face the consequences and many things, even though i risk my life. which i think is wrong that those things happened which school is to learn not to threaten ,and whop, tease and many things, but to learn and have to get along and be safe which all of that is the opposite .it is just not right .Ill pick any class but just to graduate and be safest as i can. it is not the building but the people inside it make the building.which all makes sense.well this can different in the six types of languages specially if you don't know half of what you are talking about which you will be in trouble because nobody will help you specially if you are black, which they all blacks are victims of the things the whites have done to them, the discrimination, hitting ,screaming ,the *niggers!* and bad stuff like that. which this is what i think.of both school ,my thinking.

  22. What I think about this difference is that it is not fair. This proves that seperate can't be equal. I believe that if segregation was necessary, both schools should have been equal. Because as Americans we all have the same rights and our skin color should not matter. If I were a black student in Little Rock at the time, this would influence my thinking about schools in a big way. I wouldn't want to go to school everyday knowing that another school has better classes and courses. I would want to fight and protest for what I believe in and I wouldn't let people step on me like that. Therefor what the Little Rock 9 did was very brave, because they showed people that they wouldnt give up and they proved that integration and equality is possible.

  23. i would think its stupid. just because yur a black person dont mean yu kantt have or take better klasses at their school. being black or white dontt make yu any different were all practikally tha same.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think this difference is not fair at all. you go to school to learn different things not to do laundry. Central high school has for their students the chance of learning to languages and exploring other cultures, and at Dunbar they teach them to do laundry as in expecting them not to go far. Like saying thats their future when at Central High they can really go far by learning a new language. If i was a black student in little rock i would prefer Central high because it holds a better future then Dunbar does by just doing laundry

    ReplyDelete
  25. What I think about this difference is that it's lame because each group should be equal no matter if you'r black, white, or any kind of color or race. I would think it would be very racis because each school should have some of the same classes even if you'r a diff. race.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well i think is very dumb, it can be helpful to learn how to do laundry because you learn household duties but that isnt' teacghing you anything about how to get a good future or a career. Meanwhile the classes they offer for different languages can make you learn new things and get you a well payed job;.
It would influence my thinkinh becaus e in our school we get a good educatiom meanhile they have to learn how to do luandtry that isnt very helpful

    ReplyDelete
  27. well i dont think that i might influence another school because if i in one of the schools and some other white people start talkin bad about my school i would start to influence their school because it was where we started to learn all the things we know now so my intention would just be who i am... so i woudlnt do nothin to bad ...

    ReplyDelete
  28. What i think about the differences between both schools is that they should offer the same classes for both races because its not fair.At that point they are discriminating. If i was a black student at little rock at the time it would influence me to take an act in marches or boycotts. The reason for it is because i would want to be treated equal and have an opportuniti to learn something new so i could succed in life. Also so that people could have their rights later on time.

  29. Well I think Dunbar offering a laundry class and Central offering six different language classes seems strange. For one seeing how their identical in appearance you'd expect them to offer the same courses. In a since I think this difference is wrong as the schools should at least be "Separate but Equal" but by the looks of it things are nothing like that. If I would have been an African American student in Little Rock this would make me think I would prefer Central. Why well for one I find it strange that the white students would obtain a more different education than I, in a way a better education. My decision would quite obviously be Central as during that time Whites were superior. To go to Dunbar to me doesn’t seem all great as blacks received terrible education and treatment. So in a sconce I would prefer a school that would offer a better education and opportunity.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think the differrence is what they are learning. Learning laudry will make household duties easier meanwhile white students getting the opportunity to learn from 6 different languages will give them the open doors to a better payed salary. I think that if i was currently a student at Little Rock at that time I wouldn't want to go to school beacuse i would feel inferrior to the whites, and especially with the stereotype that blacks don't have ability to talk properly. I would Fight for the right to a better education. (:

  31. if i was one of the black students i would prabably think that schools/ the school board thought that if they intergrate black / me into little rock that all of the schools would change but all that i get in little rock high school is abuse and name calling because the color of my skin. because i dont belong in a white school. but i think its wrong to be treated this way

    ReplyDelete
  32. My view point on Dunbar High only offering the blacks how to do laundry and the whites had so many different choices seems to me that the goverment might have thought the blacks wouldnt become important or have a good job.I think i would of stood up for myself because it wasnt fair that just because of skin color people would be treated better than others.I also think it wasnt fair how both schools can look the same but were different it their education. I can relate both the schools to how people of skin color were treated back then. For example all of the blacks might look alike but from the inside not all are stealers or lazy as so many peple stereotype them.I think this would influence me into thinking not everything that looks the same from the outside is the same in the inside.

Based on Central High school and Dunbar High school, I strongly believe there was a huge difference between both High schools regardless of their appearance.
For example, at Dunbar High school, a segregated school, a class offered was laundry. That was it, no options and no choices. But at Central high a desegregated school, you had the option or choice to pick which class of 6 different languages did u wanted. This shows how segregated schools are unequal compared to desegregated schools because in segregated schools students have no options, but in desegregated schools students had the options to pick whatever language they wanted to learn. Therefore, if I was a black student in Little Rock, I would have though that these differences are the key points to show how unequal schools were. Therefore I would have believed the desegregated school (Central High) was equal because it didn’t separated students and it also gave options and choices. Instead of the segregated school (Dunbar), which showed inequality because students were separated and they had neither options nor choices. Finally I can conclude that the Little rock nine were really lucky to preferred Central high because now it was becoming equal except in a low pace, but for sure it was more equal than Dunbar.

  34. What i think about the differce of how these classes is unfair. i think this because it isnt fair that a white school has different choices to pick a difffernt how to learn a differnt languages. In othercase like a all black school there is like no chice but just to learn how to do laundry. thats sad like no chicie at all. i would think why would a all white school have a lot of chocies and i came to it and its a lot but now i reamber my old school and there was only one chocie. thats not fair someone has to change this.

  35. The difference between Central H.S. and Dunbar H.S. is that they had different classes. In Central they had better choices of education, bur in Dunbar they had poor education, like they had a class on how to do laundry really? If i were a black student and i were to live in Little Rock and attened Dunbar this would affect me because I would have gotten a poor education than the other white kids in Central H.S. The different influece i would have about the schools are that if i attened Central i will be smarter and have a waayy better education then i would in Dunbar.

I think the difference in between Central High School and Durban High School is that Central high school is for whithe students also it's different because it has more choises like differnt pograms. Durban High School is diferent from Central High School because this high school is for blacks and it has less less way less pograms than central high. If I was a black guy during little rock at that time it would off influence my thinking about schools by thinking that is not fair just cuz im black i get the same eduacation as withes..

What I think about this difference is one school has more than the other. The way this would influence my thinking is that central high is racist. It is racist because Central High is an all white school. Dunbar High is an all black school. That's not the only difference. The biggest difference is Central high has a better educational system than Dunbar High. In Central you can learn different languages. In Dunbar you can learn how to do laundry. Knowing more languages can open more career opportunities. While on the other side it is kinda like Dunbar teaches you how to take care of your home.

  38. How would this influence me about other schools? If i was a black student at that tme i would think that other high schools give other opportunities but Dunbar teches how to do laundry but central high gives you six differnet languages i think that it is different how some other high schools give like central gives 6 languages to teach and dunbar teaches how to make you do laundry but i would be better of going to central because of what other high schools opportunuties gives you

  39. I think Central high has more options than Dumbar high because they could talk different languages. On Dumbar high you could only have one option to go to laundry. If i was an African American and i went to Dumbar high i would feel better than going to Central high because u have more peace and have more people thaan you know.If i went to Central high i wouldnt feel safe because most of the white people didnt like African Americans.I think going to Central has more options and more oportunities of having a good job.

  40. I think the difference in eduction is the quality of the work. At Central High School they gave the students more of a choice in what they wanted to and learn in Dunbar they told them what they will learn. Having Dunbar students learn about how to do laundry is basically telling them that all they will do when there older is do laundry. At Central High School all of them are going to be able to get better jobs because, they can speak 4 different languages. The difference is the school quality and it's not fair that some get to learn better than others because, we all deserve a good education.

I think the diffence is big because one is how to do laundry and I don’t think that will help you in life a lot. And the other one you can pick from 6 different languages. So I would go to central high because I would like to learn a diff languages than learn how to do Landry etc. If you go to central high I would of a different language because now if you know a different language. You might get more money in your job because you can help more than 1 culture. If people back then you can maybe get a better job and more money etc. If I was in the little rock nine I would of gone to central but then again maybe not because you get treated wrong. I would have to know a life story and expertness and then pick. But then again I would not let anyone get in my way of my education and my way to get a better job and get more money. So I need to know a better information and etc.

  42. I think this difference is very wrong because every one should have equal rights and blacks should have the same options as whites. It isnt very fair this way because everyone will think bad about one another. This is how racism starts. If i was a black student in Littel Rock this difference would make me think that schools should really change because if they dont kids will not want to learn because of the old text books, the old and small classrooms. This will definetly not motivate them to learn.

  43. I think this was unfair that Central High got to learn a different language and Dunbar High learned about laundry. This must have been really harsh for the black students to learn about something boring like laundry. I can understand why maybe some black students could have felt upset or jealous that the white students at Central High got to learn different types of languages. I would probably feel the same way if I got stuck learning about laundry. I would think that how come they get to learn a new language. If I were a black student in Little Rock at the time, this wouldn’t influence me to learn. I would think that why learn when we are only going to learn about laundry. This would make me not want to learn at all. This doesn’t give hope that one day we will be successful if we are studying laundry. I think that this would influence me to not like schools.

I think that this difference is wrong because just cause the kids at Dunbar are African Americans, they had to be taught what they were going to be doing when they got older. The Teachers could've taught them how to survuve in the world or how to defend themselves. But I think that the teachers were either scared or didn't think that the African American kids were able to accomplish something. But in the book " Warrirs Don't Cry" Melba made it through her first week of school almost by herself. Danny mostly just walked with her. If I was a African American kid at that time I would not have faith in myself and I would probably not know all the things I know now. I would think that I had to do what I was told and that I couldn't do anything else.

  45. The difference between Central High and Dunbar High School was wrong because all education should be the same for everyone not one better than the other because thats what we are promised living in America.Central High School was better in education just because before it was an all white school.Dunbar had less classes than Central because it was an all black school. If I was one of The Little Rock Nine I would feel mad and motivated to do my best and show the world that a black person could be smart.I would be mad because its not fair that white people are just given a better life than African Americans just for being white and just because I was black I got the sloppy seconds but in a way it would motivate me to do much better and prove Im as equal as white people.

  46. This would make a difference about the schools because they're not equal. For it to be fair and equal both schools should have the same rights, otherwise it wouldn't be fair. I would think for it to be fair both schools should have the same languages and the same things each one has. if i was a student a little rock i would like to learn the same things both schools are learning.
