Respond to Your Classmates

Look back at the responses from the last post about stereotypes from House on Mango Street. I want you to respond to one of your classmate's thoughts and make a connection to what he or she wrote and a judgment (share your thinking). Here is an example of what I am looking for:

Jessica Pelayo wrote:
The author thinks the stereotypes she describes come from everyone around us. We are all guilty of prejudice because we all judge people by their color or how they look. And that's how stereotypes are started. I also believe that they come from all of us, because I am sure that there is not one person out there that hasn't prejudged someone. So we need to blame ourselves. I think stereotyping can be stopped by everyone just accepting everyone else instead of the first thing they notice is the color of their skin or the way they look when you first see them and just getting to know the person a little bit more. Because we are all equal and it's not right.

Jessica,

I like you how you say that we are all guilty of judging others because we all have have looked at other people and had thoughts (many times wrong) right away. It isn't right (like you say) and I think that it holds people back from meeting some really awesome people. These types of judgments are the basis for stereotyping. For example, I am friends with someone who has a very heavy accent. A couple of my friends think it is strange that I am friends with this person, but the person is extremely funny and I am grateful for having had the opportunity to have gotten to know the person the way that I have. I could have been like my friends, this person has a heavy accent and think that the individual isn't as smart as they are, but I took the time to get to the individual. For me, trying to avoid stereotyping is an issue of fairness. I know I have many imperfections and I'd hate for someone to miss out on the chance to really get to know me because they judged me for being too tall, too white, too bookish, too beautiful (j/k), or whatever. Thanks for an insightful post.

Mr. Barr

I Agree with her because when you see someone walk in into a room and there not the same race ass you, you judge them by what you have heard. You don't even know if its true and you really don't care to find out..
In the tv it may come up "Hispanic man caught robing a bank" when people read/see it they think right away oh there all the same. Or "Mexican man caught crossing the border" and right away you say they only come here for one thing to rob or take our jobs.(We ain't here to take your jobs if you get your lazy ass up maybe you will find a job.)
& when you see a pit bull right away you say oh there fighting dogs there no good your judging. You label a person with out even know it.
People may say they never judge someone but everyone hjas jude or labeled someone by the way they look or there race.

  2. I think that she is right. Everyone here and there are always stereotyping people on the way they look or the way they talk or something that they seem to be not human(or not like anyone else here in America). People discrimination people should stop but for a fact everyone knows that it wont because we all do it. For example children here at Nightingale school do it mostly everyday they stare at people for dressing weird or dressing the inappropriate way. They judge the way people skin colors are or they way they speak. Most people who judge don't understand they are going to get looked at the same way.

I agree with what you say. Theres people all over the world who are judged. If they didn't jump to that stage so fast they might find that the person is actualy a really good guy. I know since that how it was with a person I know. He was judged all over his school. No one wanted to talk with him. Soon though a student there talked with him. Once the student got to know him , the student and him became friends. After a while the school got to know him and now he's no longer judged. This shows that being a stereotype is a bad thing to be.

Well based on mi opinion I think that they think we are scared of them because maybe we might have heard of someone we know that might have been jumped by one of them and we think oh so maybe they are all the same. Also they might think of us as a bad person just because they think we might say something bad about them, and maybe someone they know got insulted and they think oh so they might say the same thing to us. Well not all of us are like that and I know some of them are not like others. Well we think they are dirty, stupid, lame, and sometimes when its gangs they think they are part of their hometown gang. She thinks it comes from people entering a black neighborhood and not knowing anyone like they think the worst of the situation. I think it comes from people who are racist like they start saying stuff abut them that isn’t true. Plus they tell the people that believe it. I think it can not be stopped because even if we do something about it there is always going to be somebody that will be racist.

    Melissa,
i like how you look at both point of veiws. This shows how each side is thinking and what they feel.I also like how you aknowledge that no matter what racism will always be around. We know that not all peole think and act the same way but do they? I also like how you mention gangs and how they judge. In my own prespective you are correct about stereotypes
thank you for a really really really really awesome post!! ♥___♥

  5. THAT IS ON PREJUDGING THAT IS NOT RIGHT discrimination specially on people you dont even know and which is really wrong and based on peoples fellings.ity is guilty judging other people because what would you feel if you were that person .it is not the color or size it is the felling and the action of that person it is just be getting to know that person .which is what i think it should be right.

  7. @Orlando,
Well I found your paragraph to be good. Yet I found your response to whether discrimination can end I believe it can. For one if everyone has the equal rights freedom, job, education, and etc. Discrimination can be stopped if the whole world agrees to it. Now I believe you are wrong in believing in that the author learned stereotypes from the world. For one long before their was hatred because of the intelligence, color, race and looks of a person within the world. And my point is that she learned it from the world not just in her neighborhood. Another thing I kind of disagree is how you stated "To show all how she was seen in a neighborhood even before presenting each other". Now I believe she wrote this article to talk about how it is in most neighborhoods were people of different race, ethnicity and so on enter one neighborhood and get scared of the strangers. And so in the end I liked your response but found things I did not agree with.

I like how you said that it can be stopped if we all get to know each other but some people aren’t as friendly as you think infact they are mean that they wont even give the people they don’t know a chance. I think it can be stopped but people don’t even care to give it a chance. Plus even if we try to stop it people will just do the same thing like there is always going to be that someone one person who will ruin it all. People who talk about other people are…. Lets just dumb because they like talking about other people but when other people start talking about them they start wetting their pants and start getting mad and stuff. that’s like messed up dude!!! So I agree with you but there are a lot of… dumb people out there that don’t like people talking about them but like talking about other people. I also think that they should think of how people feel when they talk about them.

I strongly believe the stereotype she describe come form The united stated because they are not from Mexico. I made that conclusion because I believe Sandra Cisneros is a latina. I believe stereotype can be stopped by first looking at the similarities we have among us people.
An example of stereotype would be ;Ex. All Asians are smart ,or All Mexicans are poor. Based on that statement a Mexican would know that is a stereotype just how we make stereotypes about others. Just because a person shows certain characteristics it doesn't mean all people from the group are. Therefore that’s how I believe stereotype can be stopped.

    Jackie ,

I like how you put an example of stereotype like Asians being smart, Mexicans being poor cause that’s how people judge and stuff. Cause people shudnt judge based on what they see or hear.

    Bella,

I agree with your thinking. You made me change my mind and now I agree with you that stereotyping can not really be stopped. Everyone in their life has judged someone by their image. It is just some thing that happens. It is something that everyone does and i guess it can't be stopped. Everyone has their own way of thinking and it depends on how they take in things. I also agree that stereotyping comes mostly by the race. I also think that it comes by the way someone is dressed because of their religion or their way of life. I also agree with you that stereotyping is started by what people see or hear from others. Mostly with gossip of people. Like when there is a new kid, everyone says that he looks evil or emo and to watch out because he has a knife or that he's really mean. Many people go by what they see or heard from others and don't take their time to get to know the person. Their thoughts may change. I agree that stereotyping and prejudging can't be stopped but, when you prejudge someone, it isn't always a bad judgment so prejudging isn't all that bad. It can be good because it helps you keep your guard up on certain people.

No that just means some of us were born with different types of ways that god blessed us with such as a different color of skin.We judge them as being real dumb but, not knowing that sometimes we are born with mental problems so, maybe it takes time for us black/whites to learn the simple tings in life. The author thinks that they are from some neighborhood where everthing is fancy and not to messy. I think that the neighborhood they come is simple and not to dirty as some of the blacks neighborhoods are sometimes. But, I noticed that if we could all come together maybe we would be able to be compared to the fancy, and clean neighborhoods like the whites.By the actions of the whites and the blacks I feel that if we just stop judging eachother by our skin color and get to know eachother that would be a good start to stop sterotyping!

    Renetta,
I agree with what you said that we judge people sometimes as being "real dumb" but they might have an issue. And I also believe that not everyone should be the same skin color. Because god did bless everyone with different skin colors so we all wont be the same and we can all have our own unique way of looks, thoughts, intelligence and we all have good things and bad things because we are not perfect and we will never be the same. Each of us has our own characteristics and we all like different and similar things. We should have pride on who we are, our skin color, and our heritage but we should not feel superior to anybody else. Nobody belongs to the "perfect race" Because there is no such thing. We should learn to accept eachothers qualities and disadvantages so they can accept ours as well. I like how you said if we all work together we can make our neihborhood and community better. I agree on this because people complain all the time but yet we do nothing to stop it or to make things better. That way people wont feel like they are superior if the neighborhood they live in is cleaner. Because most of us just complain about it but do nothing and thats what we need to start doing.

  14. In Orlando`s responce he states how stereotypes will never ended. I believe that you are right in a way. Yes there will always be someone to ruin everything. Yes may be there will never be a point where all stereotyping just disappears, but even though we can not stop it comepletly we can try to stop it from becoming so big like it is now. Just by trying to stop ourselves and maybe even others from doing this, what we do can grow bigger and spread to even more people. We can let those people who ruin it, continue you can not force anyone to change, but you can help change their minds. If they continue to then they are the type that will never change their ways. We know this world will never be perfect, so we should know not all stereotyping will end because this is what one of the flaws of our world is.

We both know that stereotyping comes from anyone and everyone.I also agree with her saying that stereotypes come from those who dnt know better and those who gossip, stereotyping a person. Its not only blacks and whites though. Its many people around the world. I disagree with her in the part were stereotyping can stop. I think its impossible because theres is millions of people in this world and everyone is different so all the time just by looking at one person and not knowing them a bit...you will alredy have something to say about them.

  16. The stereotypes that they have of “us” are that they think we are all the same. For example, they think that all Mexicans like to eat rice and beans or that we are all dark skin. Not all Mexicans like rice or beans or not all are dark skin. The stereotypes we have of them are that we expect them to eat certain food or be really smart at everything. For example, people think that all Asians are very smart. If they see a person with a certain heritage, right away they judge them by what we hear or think. The author might think that the stereotypes come from things we hear about. We are all use to our type, that when we go to a different color neighborhood we look straight ahead and roll up our windows from our cars. I think the stereotypes might come from things that people see in TV. They think just because they saw it in a movie or in a show, they think its true. Another place where stereotype might come from are bad experiences. For example, maybe a family member was murdered by an Asian, African American, Mexican, or a White person, they think that all of their kind are bad people. I believe that stereotypes come from TV and bad experiences, and that people expect us to act a certain way when they see us.
    Leslie G.

I like how you added many different kinds of stereotypes. I also really like how you explained where many cases of stereotyping comes from. I also agree that many cases of stereotyping comes from t.v or experiences with a certain group of people. I really do agree that people judge others by the way they look and how different they are from yourself. I really do think everyone in some point of there lives have judge others by their looks and asumed their something and they turn out to be another thing that you`ve expected. I agree that not all Mexicans are darked skin and that all Asians are super smart everyone has their own personality and they are different from what people asume with out getting to know them. I think many people look at me as too short and that is too girly i know im not perfect and nobody is perfect and know that people are always going too have comments about a person and judge them. People will just have to deal with it or stand up for themselves.

  17. I think we are all guilty of stereo-type because, every time we meet some body new or seen some body in your head their is already thought and opinion about that person and most of those thoughts aren't good one's. Like one day i was with my friends and we had seen a bysexual man dressed as a lady and he was wearing a wig and, next to him was another man every body thought the man was gay because he was walking it with a bysexual man. So people right their were stereo-typing the man. I think stereo-typing wont stop because every one thinks bad or puts people under a catigory.

I was walking inside Target and this girl caught my attention because she was with a bunch of guys and she seemed pregnat and she was looking all crappy , I imeddiatly assumeed that she was a hoe and that was possably pregnat by one of those guys . When I got home I thaught about my actions and I thought about how I should stop stereotype because We are not perfect and we shouldnt judge someone based on their looks or color . Each one of us should MAKE THE MOVE ! & We should stop stereotyping because If not all this hatred between mexicans , black & whites will never stop , And we shouldnt worry about our looks .

The book The House on Mango Street shows me that when a different race goes into another different race neighborhood they think its another different world. The stereotypes that they have with the people of mango street is that they think that they are going to harm them, but in reality they aren't. They think that the people on msngo street are going to mob em or steal their stuff. I think the people think they come from A white rich neighborhood where there is no violence. Stereotype can be stopped by not judging people on how they and where they live.

Well edna i agree with you that everyone and think they are different. everyone tells eachother mean things. people do think that if there in a rich neigboor nothing bad would happen. that right there is based a human of there skin colr or on how much money they have.i really dont underdtand they people do this things but i think this is a commom thing in life. humans juge human and i dont think ill stop unless people get to really know a person and not talk about them like mostly everyone does. i fell what you get they juge me for being short >.< but i live with it. i really liked your post.

They will just stereotipe because they can be jelouse , or feel better than others out there . They might think its funny judging people and they dont look at them self and realise there not so perfect nether. I think stereotiping can be stopt by some one thats been truh alout & it comes and talks to those who do it so they can learn how its not good.

I think the author stereotypes come from us. When whites took blacks as trash or lower class. I'm guessing the stereotypes came from their adults at the time. They passed it on from a person to person until everyone felt that way. Still this can be stoped. We must stop telling our youth about this. If we can keep this from going for the next generation the next will be pure and will not be stereotypes.

I thought it was cool that you compared the story to life. After all stereotypes and other insults come from one person then it spreads. The way you said how white people thought of black showed me or even reminded me where the roots of stereotypes came from. To make a connection I can say there was one time i was hanging out with someone and the rest of my friends were making fun of that person. Although it wasn't because of the color of that person's skin they still laughed at the person. I bet that if they really got to know the person they wouldn't act so mean. To be honest, I don't really understand why we all stereotype one another. I guess it would be because we don't want to meet everyone. If thats the case I guess i guess we should all be more accecpting towards one another. You are right, if we just stop telling the youth how to make stereotypes the world would be alot better.

Your right people shouldn’t be ashamed of having cleaning jobs. Everyone needs a job and someone needs to do the dirty work. The only reason we have jobs like that is because, we never had the chance to go to school and earn a degree in doing what we wanted to do as children. I like that you put we get stereotypes come from seeing other people and just because they look different from us that doesn’t make them better or worse, it just makes them different. We do put people in categorize just because, they have slightly darker hair or something that isn’t what we are use to and that’s what your saying. I think that the way you put it makes sense because, that is how we do things even if we don’t know were stereotyping people its just something we do.

I think stereotyping came from how people view others,if they think someones rude, mean,or lazy then they begin to think about everyone of the same race is the same way. The person would probably gossip about the person and it would spread and a stereotype would form. Stereotyping cant really be stopped since everyone will always find ways to judge a person based on little things they barely know."

Its true what all my Classmates wrote. We can stop stereotypes by not judging people based on how they look, how they dress, and what type of music they listen to. Everyone in the world has prejudged someone at least one time. If you said you havent then, your lying. Many people get judged from what race they are or from thier beliefs. Sometimes they even get judged for their past. Like i have a friend who gets judged by other people on the way he dresses and how he has his hair. They dont even know him.

The stereotypes they have of us is that they think they think we are going to come at all of a sudden and attack them. This makes them take extra percaution(black people). The white people think that when they go into the black neighborhood, black people would come out and attack them with shiny knives. Takiking extra percaution as if about to be attacked. Just like black people. The author thinks that these stereotypes come from those who don't know better. The stupid poeple who get lost and go there by mistake. I think tht they come from people who give out false info. Gossip that comes arround from here and there. The thing is that people accually believe it without taking action and investigating themselves. Stereotyping can be stopped by not believeing what everyone says. Some of it might be true but go investigate with the source or the accuser. Be open minded. Stereotyping is what a lot of people do and it comes from everywhere but it can be stopped.
    Dear Eli,
I do agree with you with the fact that many people have stereotypes against people due to ethnicity. Though it is our faul for creating beliefs that hurt others. Just like in the holocaust with the nazi propaganda and anti-semitism. It is up to us to change are beliefs and as you said be open minded. I also agree that many stereotypes do start of from people and gossip though at points even the media can lie so it is difficult to know when it is a lie or not. Maybe stereotyping can be stopped though this will take a long time since its been going on since FOR EVER and when americans are told something they dont like they will rebel. So it would be very difficult. Anyways I liked your viewpoint of stereotypes(:

  30. the stereotype comes from every one they way people see things and they stare to think wrong and they just dont know what people are or they haven even met them and they say stuff with out knowing the thing that other people from our kine does and they thing we all the same, because they think we are gang member we are dangers but no people like Mexicans other people think that we are criminal we are Robers or some like that but no, the only way we can stop is by knowing each other like go to the other peoples houses and know ichother and get the type of stereotype out of them that way they get to know us and not think that we are like the other "Mexicans" or the reputation that they create of our people and culture

The author thinks that the stereotypes come from the people that moved into the neighborhood. I think they come from us, because as soon as we see soebody that we haven't met nor know anything about we already havee something on our mind about them. I think stereotyping can't be stopped. It's what one thinks.. Nobody can stop you from thinking things of other people, even thugh we shouldn't until we meet them. To me stereotyping is wrong even though i do it once in a while but i feel that it's natural to stereotype. Stereotyping will always be around no matter what. We all say things about each other just like we all label each other.

    Dear Jennifer,
i think you are corect its true people do think that way and stuf. but maybe there might be aperson who thinks that way. but it is mainly natural it can prbablybe stoped there is a posibility but some people are rude in the world. if we stop thinking about what people are and just get to know them then htere wouldnt be steryotypes or enemies. also if we keep our coments to ourselfs.

what i think about your response was that u really need to have a little of explanation and more sentences to have this response in the purpose of a stereotype.

People have different sterotypes of us. For one I know people call us, Mexicans dirty, beggers and lazy. I know for a fact thats not true because, my dad works night and day to make everything possible for us. They also say we don't go all through school, that is not true since both of my brothers are in college and graduating. I think people think of us that way because, some people do act that way. They sit on the street and beg and just wait for things to happen to them so when you see that you believe all people of that race act that way. We think of other people in a stereo typical way too. I've heard that African Americans are rude and don't have any manners but, not everyone is like that I know several that go against that because, it depends on the parents and how they raise them. I also have heard that all blondes are dumb but every blonde I've met have gone trhough college. People put stereo types on others because, of experiencest they had with that specific race and now they think all of them are like that. If we want to stop stereotyping we should start with our selves and not judge people on the first apperence we have of them. Once we deal with our selves we move on with the people around us like our parents, or the children we know. If the kids can stop stereo typing then the future will stop stereotyping. Stereo typing hurts everyone because it effects everyone and should be stopped, because it will and can happen to you.

    Esther....
I think what you said was right because even though someone sais something about someone else it doesn't mean its true.I say that it's true what you said about Mexicans that some people who are Mexicans do work. I also think that people are wrong just because they see like one or two Mexicans who are lazy and if they maybe begging for money that doesn't mean that all of the people who are Mexican do. I think it's wrong that people just critizize us by what they have seen in streets or somewhere. Everybody's different like what they say about the blonds that they are dumb that's not true I know many people who are blond and they have graduated college and they have a good job.I think that your right that we also stereo type people too because of what we have have heard other people say of them.I think you were also right about how if we want to stop stereo typing we should start with ourselves.

They passed it on from a person to person until everyone felt that way. Still this can be stoped. We must stop telling our youth about this. If we can keep this from going for the next generation the next will be pure and will not be stereotypes.

I do believe that everyone has a stereotype about everyone. I also agree on how you said that stereotypes come from what we see is different from our selves. The stereotypes are wrong about a person, just because you see a person that is kind of like the stereotype doesn’t mean they are all the same way. It does hurt the person’s feelings and we should stop the stereotype so we can get to know a person better. I think its true how people judge someone by the way they look. Everyone has categorize someone and been categorize by a person. I think that what you put in your post are really good examples of stereotypes. We should all stop our selves before we judge a person based on how they look. We are all different in our own ways.

Denise Zuniga: The sterotypes that they have of us is that they think we're scared of them, & they think we don't like them. The sterotypes that we have of them is that we think that we're going to get hurt by them. It can be that people think that their dangerous to us because of maybe something someone saw, & right away thought all blacks were like that. His sterotypes comes from like, racism & seggregation or he problably expirenced a situoation where someone thought he was going to attack someone just because he's black. They problably come from the past, maybe he witnessed something happen. Sterotyping can stop by people judgeing eachother without even knowing somebody. Don't put other people into catorgories just the way they look. To get to know somebody before you say anything about them.

My thought to this is how everyone judges everyone by how they look or how they have their first apperiance. Everyone really gets bullied sooner or later. An example is how we "play" around with Diana. Hahaha, even tho were kidding people take all crazy & belive that were beeing mean to her. Another example is how i judged someone by the way she acted & talked & walked , like befor we were friends and everything but, then she acted like everyone wanted to be like her when actually everyone hates her. I still don't regreat it because she started judgeing me at the same time & then later she wants to be all friends after all the hash words. Yeah i could just ignore her & i do but, im not ganna forgive her. My friends were bystanders when this happend because they let me do what i want & didn't stop me and tolded me this was wrong they also just went along with her picking on her. I shouldn't be judgeing people because everyone judges me at the same time & it's bad.

Ellena, i agree with your statement where you say, "If we want to stop stereotyping we should start with our selves and not judge people on the first apperence we have of them." I beileve this is true, because if people want people to stop sterotyping them, then they shouldn't sterotype others. as you said, "If the kids can stop stereo typing then the future will stop stereotyping." teachers are always telling us that we are the future, that we have to power to change the world. when you said that if kids stop, then the future will stop, it made me think about having the power to stop sterotypes. "Stereo typing hurts everyone because it effects everyone and should be stopped, because it will and can happen to you." was something else you noted on. White people, (referred to as they.) have sterotyped blacks (referred to as us.) as dangerous. In the paragraphs above, it states that white people beileve that the blacks will hurt them. White's have become afriad of blacks. Whites probably sterotyped the blacks as dangerous out of fear. Black people in the paragraphs above, sterotype whites as stupid people, who don't belong. Black people have probably sterotyped white people as stupid, because White's treat them like they are all uneducated, or none of them know anything. I think the author says sterotypes come from apperence, based on the paragraph where she describes the men in a hat, the young boy who looks like a grown man, and the man with the crooked eye. Based on everything i know, and have learned about sterotypes, i beileve they come from fear and envy. I think people are sterotyped because people are afraid of other people, or jealous because they have something more. I think sterotypes also come from other people. Kids aren't just born sterotyping people, or born racist, it has to be taught. If people never said things like "Whites are Stupid," or like, "blacks are dangerous." people wouldn't be saying it. I honestly beileve that sterotyping couldn't be stopped. Even if every child, man and woman was bi-racial, or all made the same amouth of money. Sterotyping wouldn't stop because people always want to feel better than others. Sterotyping can't be stopped because everyone always has something to say about someone else culture or someones clothes. Sterotyping will never end.

    Audriannah,
i agree with you when you said, "sterotyping can't be stopped." i think it can't be stopped because people will always have something to say about one another. when you said "Even if every child, man and woman was bi-racial, or all made the same amouth of money. Sterotyping wouldn't stop because people always want to feel better than others." that made me think about mexican sterotypes when people say, "all mexicans are lazy." which is not true. at all. people always have to make fun of someone else too feel good about themselves. People will always make fun of people because of weight, or height and skin color. things that most times people don't have control over, no one gets to pick their race.

    Santos,

Well, you started off by talking about THEY or THEM as criminals, but here’s a flash, who are they? Who are them? You have to stay more both descriptive and also formal on your nouns, and who are people you are talking about, or else, like me, people get easily confused. Another side to this, I thought that when you said, “ Now I think stereotyping can be stopped if people get to know one another and if we stop living in segregation.” This quote tells me how you as a real human believes how segregation can actually stop. This reminds me of a story I read about a person of strong beliefs of racism stopping. This person talks about how she was to overcome strong racism in her community, how she would even put her life on the line to help stop racism. Keep up the strong beliefs.
You really kept yourself on the right track when you were talking about how you believe that discrimination came from years of racism and prejudice diversity. This was the hook! This made read the whole thing! Good phrase. All I would say Is to write more next time.

For,Example some sterotypes that they have of us is braveness, courage, and those civil rights because they fought for it and never give up.Also some stereotypes that we have in common is courage and those WHO make themselves brave to fight for it.well the sterytypes could come from a person feelings or heart because you are saying it.maybe they come from a country that heritated and brought to a new country.many ways sterotypes could be stopped because All people deserve a chance. Stereotyping is wrong and cruel and definitely has an impact on society. It seems that many who do stereotype do it out of some imagined fear and then continue to make up silly stupid reasons to justify it and perpetuate it.We tend to stereotype men (black and white), women (black and white), teenagers, gender different folks and on and on and on.
It time we stopped and actually got to know the individual and not the stereotype.another way couls be that people won't join and no stereotyping could be now .

I agree about how you say that sterotypes should be stopped. I do believe sterotypes should be stopped because their not right. It's not good to judge people on their first impression. A example I have is that there was a new kid in my school, & I judegdher because she wasn't pretty or anything.

    Dear Leslie,

I agree with your post. Stereotypes do come from TV and a bad experience. In TV we see that the 'popular' clique in TV, they are selfish and mean and we then think that it's true in real life, but it's not. The 'popular' crowd aren't mean in real life, but we immediately think that because of TV. Stereotypes also do come from a bad experience since I know that's true. My dad had a bad experience with a African American back when he first came to the U. S., and doesn't trust them completely to this day. He thinks they're all bad, but they aren't. I know a bunch of them and they're nice people. If we all just to get to really know a person, we can find out that not all Mexicans are lazy. Not all Asians are smart. If we can really get to know a person we can disprove these stereotypes and stop stereotyping.

I think that it is true that the stereotype comes allot of times from TV shows and movies. Many people believe what they see in TV and in particular be cause in the movies they always put the Mexicans like gang members, theifs, or drug sellers. And the people sometimes stereotype. Like once my grandfather was trying to buy a ranch in Indiana but the neighbors were discriminating him because he was Hispanic. They even felt like like he was going to do something to them so they came out with a gun. But my grandfather explained to them that he only wanted to buy the ranch that not all people are bad people that good and bad people are everywhere to take time to know him that e cant judge him by how he looks or is. Now my grandfather and his neighbor are very good friends. I think that all people should take time know someone before they steriotype someone.

I wouldn't want people looking at me different in any sort of way. Because we are all different, if we really try to stop stereotyping things can change. A connection that i can make is how she said that we all have guilt of prejudice people just like she said everybody does at some point. I mostly like the part when Denise describes the stereotypes as wrong and that we should not put other people into categories just because the way they look. I can connect that point of thinking to my point of thinking because I really think putting people into categories just the way they look isn’t right at all. We should really at least try to not judge and instead getting to know that person ,like Denise said. We should all get along. Just like they stereotype us, we stereotype them and it aint right. We stereotype them by been angry or racist. They stereotype us by anger too and segregation. I also like the part when Denise made a connection with the author. Thanks for the best stereotyping post.

The stereotypes that we have of them might be how their dressed, how they live, their color, and who they hang out with. We walk around and just judge by looking but not even getting to know the person. That's called judging someone and there's also a phrase that goes along with it "Don't Judge a Book by its Cover". It doesn't only happen with black people but other races to and it's completely wrong what we do. I think that the stereotypes of these people come from the past and the racism there was back then has followed them through the years. We should try and stop this and we can if all of us try. For example getting to know the people first and giving them a chance to know you. Stopping stereotype is up to all of us not just one person.

    Yuli,
I think this is correct because you do have a point we create Stereo types and one way we can stop it is by meeting that person. like before starting to judge that person we all need to work on this if we want to stop it. And i hope we do. Not ALL of us are perfect but were special in a way.

I think stereotypes comes from people that grew up doing that and the other people follow their steps. I think stereotyping could be stopped by their parenths teach them right and not to judge other people from how they look. The author describes that they come from our neighborhood.

Melanie i think tha your start wa not that good b/c i don't think that people grow up with stereotyping i think only if you teach it to them they will say it. i like how you said that if parents tell their little kid not to stereotype they wont do it.

  56. There are a few types of stereotypes that "they have of us", one example is that they believe we are dangerous. They believe they will get killed with knives these people have hidden on them when they walk through the neighborhood. They also believe these people are stupid because they got "lost" and entered the neighborhood by mistake. The stereotypes "we have if them" is that if they drive into a neighborhood that is not theirs then they would have to roll the window up. That something would happen to them, that they are the dangerous ones know. I believe the author believes these stereotypes come from what people might have heard of or what they believe. I believe that these stereotypes come from people who have walked through neighborhoods that were not familiar and may have had things happen to them. I also believe these stereotypes have come from what they see when they have someone from a different neighborhood walk or drive into theirs and act all scared and suspicious. I believe that stereotyping can be stopped by actually getting to know people before saying these kind of things. We can also stand up when we here people talking about someone they don't even know and tell them how do they know that is true.

Jasmine, I also believe stereo types come from people who have walked through neighborhoods that were not familiar and may have had things happen to them because one time a friend went through a new neighborhood that he didn’t know so well and he saw some people who was breaking into a car and he starting saying that all Mexicans break into cars when that’s not true. But sometime I also don’t feel very comfortable in a neighborhood that I never been before and I don’t confront people straight in the face. I also agree with you on that we should get to know the person better before we judge them because if we don’t we might end up losing a very good friend. I strongly agree with you on that we should stop a person from stereotyping when they don’t know the person first because that way we stop stereotyping from spreading.

I like how you said that we are all guilty of stereotype. I also think that people passed on racism like you said that they passed it on from a person to person until everyone felt that way. I also agree that streotype could be stopped and should tell people that we are not different we are all the same and we should not be judgmental of our looks because we are all humans and we should get along with everyone around the world.

I like how you said that people think that we are dangerous because if they don't know us they get scared or feel nervous. I also think you are right by saying that we think they're stupid because it's true if we see them lost or something right away we say they're stupid since they don't know they're way in the neighborhood. But i do disagree with the part where you said thst it can be stopped because stereotypying is always going to be around no matter what. People won't stop labeling each other because they think it's cool to label each other and well i guess it's like a war.

    Bella,
iLike how you said that we "I dont really think stereotype can be stopped because everybody has something to say about a person by just looking at them and not even knowing them." because its true we will always be stereotype people nobody can stop it its like if it comes naturally. were all use to doing that. for example im friends with a girl that nobody likes they ask meh why i just said its cause nobody hangs with her and i feel bad but i hate how they do make judgment on our "friendship" and i hope nobody else keeps on judging it.

The stereotypes that the the whites have of the blacks is the same one that the blacks have of the whites. When the whites go into a black neighborhood they are scared thinking they are going to do something to them and as the author states "All brown all around, we are safe. But watch us drive into a neighborhood of another color and our knees go shakity-shake and our car windows get rolled up tight and our eyes look straight." This makes me realize that everyone is scared of any other color that is not theirs and they only feel safe with the people that 'look' like they do.

    Dear Lovely Jessica,
I like how you stated that we are all guilty of Prejudice because you perfectly know we do that ,and so does everybody else. I agree that we are all guilty of prejudice and that it's wrong yet we still do it. Like when I first met you When you were in 6th grade the first time, not the second time :p I thought you would be mean since you snitched on that Melanie girl, You are kind of mean well to other people but my point is that I was quick to judge you and it turned out that you were a pretty awesome block buddy. Pre-Judging somebody is just an opinion. First you have to actually give the person a chance and get to know the person. (:

    Anonymous,
I like what you said that racism can be stopped if we can get everyone to know each other but some people aren’t as considerate as you think they are they are bigots that they wont even give the people a chance . Plus even if we give it a try people will just do the same thing like there is always going to be one person who is different or an outcast. People who talk about other people are bigots. that is just dumb because they like talking behind someone's back but when other people start talking about them they start getting mad and being stubborn and taking it out on someone else. so evil and discriminating! So I agree with you but there are a lot of people out there that don’tthink before doing like people talking about them but like talking about other people those are people who are ignorant. I also think that they should think on how other people feel when they talk about them.

like you how you say that we are all guilty of judging others because we all have have looked at other people and had thoughts (many times wrong) right away. I Agree with her because when you see someone walk in into a room and there not the same race ass you, you judge them by what you have heard. You don't even know if its true and you really don't care to find out..

I agree with Jessica because we all need to blame our selves when stereotypes are started. The first time we see someone new we prejudge them by the color of their skin, how they act, or even the way they look.It isnt fair wen you want to meet a new friend and they prejudge you. Then you have one less friend. Noone will like you that way. So when their is a new kid at your class room trie not to make a stereotype about them. Then people will think its true and wont hang out with them. How would you like it if someone prejudged you and told every one a lie about you

    Stephanie,

I agree with you because it true that people judge a person or a group of people by how they look not by there personality. Also because every person in this world had judge a person once in their life from how they look. For example my friend Anthony he judge a girl because she is ugly. That is mad becuase other people might think something else.

I think stereo-typing wont stop because every one thinks bad or puts people under a catigory.

    fili:
i like yu mentioned that when we meet new ppl or we see ppl that right away we already have something to say about them even if we dont knoe them i agree wyt chu on that and thats a big thing we all have to work on to change

i agree with luis's perspective about agreeing with jessica becasue we all need to blame .. our selves on being a sterotype .because every day we prejudge people. when ever we see someone we dont knw thats a "outsider" we start to prejudge that person by the way, they talk, dress, act, or skin color. its really not fair for the "outsider" that doesnt knw any body and just wants to make friends. how would u feel if someone prejudges u. youll prabably be the next "outsider". they would talk to u make u feel depressed and wished u never prejudged that indivigual. thats why sterotypes should be stoped
