Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address-March 4, 1865



Second Inaugural Address
Washington, D.C.
March 4, 1865

This is the last paragraph of Lincoln's speech:

"With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation's wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan--to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations."

Assignment: What theme do you think Abe Lincoln is trying to get across here? Pay attention to the date the speech was given; this will help you to infer the theme. He gave this speech before the end of the Civil War. How might this message apply to wars going on today? I am expecting one detailed paragraph in response.

Starting Personal Narratives

Looking back at your notes containing different ways to start a personal narrative, use one of the strategies to start the following personal narrative:

Topic: Write a personal narrative about something that really excited you.

Don't forget-
1. Use one of the strategies from your notes.
2. Focus in on one specific time... don't start to write a story that took place over weeks or months.
3. Start to hint at a theme (message that you are trying to get across to the reader) by the end of the paragraph.

What did you notice? Be specific. Talk about the location, people's appearances, and the actual battle. Is this what you visualized when you think about typical Civil War battles? Explain in one paragraph.
