Those who don’t know any better come into our neighborhood scared. They think we’re dangerous. They think we will attack them with shiny knives. They are stupid people who are lost and got here by mistake.
But we aren’t afraid. We know the guy with the crooked eye is Davy the Baby’s brother, and the tall one next to him in the straw brim [hat], that’s Rosa’s Eddie V. and the big one that looks like a dumb grown man, he’s Fat Boy, though he’s not fat anymore nor a boy.
All brown all around, we are safe. But watch us drive into a neighborhood of another color and our knees go shakity-shake and our car windows get rolled up tight and our eyes look straight. Yeah. That is how it goes and goes.

I think the author stereotypes come from us. When whites took blacks as trash or lower class. I'm guessing the stereotypes came from their adults at the time. They passed it on from a person to person until everyone felt that way. Still this can be stoped. We must stop telling our youth about this. If we can keep this from going for the next generation the next will be pure and will not be stereotypes.
ReplyDeleteI think sterotype are people that prejudge people by the way they look or act. Sterotypes come from people that are allways being mistreated or left out and they feel like being heard so the judge people. A Sterotype can be stopped by confronting this person and tell him or her why.

The sterotypes that we have of them is that we think that we're going to get hurt by them. It can be that people think that their dangerous to us because of maybe something someone saw, & right away thought all blacks were like that. His sterotypes comes from like, racism & seggregation or he problably expirenced a situoation where someone thought he was going to attack someone just because he's black. They problably come from the past, maybe he witnessed something happen. Sterotyping can stop by people judgeing eachother without even knowing somebody. Don't put other people into catorgories just the way they look. To get to know somebody before you say anything about them.

ReplyDeleteThe stereotypes they have of us is that they think they think we are going to come at all of a sudden and attack them. This makes them take extra percaution(black people). The white people think that when they go into the black neighborhood, black people would come out and attack them with shiny knives. Takiking extra percaution as if about to be attacked. Just like black people. The author thinks that these stereotypes come from those who don't know better. The stupid poeple who get lost and go there by mistake. I think tht they come from people who give out false info. Gossip that comes arround from here and there. The thing is that people accually believe it without taking action and investigating themselves. Stereotyping can be stopped by not believeing what everyone says. Some of it might be true but go investigate with the source or the accuser. Be open minded. Stereotyping is what a lot of people do and it comes from everywhere but it can be stopped.
ReplyDeleteThe stereotypes that the the whites have of the blacks is the same one that the blacks have of the whites. When the whites go into a black neighborhood they are scared thinking they are going to do something to them and as the author states "All brown all around, we are safe. This makes me realize that everyone is scared of any other color that is not theirs and they only feel safe with the people that 'look' like they do. The author thinks the stereotypes she describes come from everyone around us. We are all guilty of prejudice because we all judge people by their color or how they look. And that's how stereotypes are started. I also believe that they come from all of us, because I am sure that there is not one person out there that hasn't prejudged someone. So we need to blame ourselves. I think stereotyping can be stopped by everyone just accepting everyone else instead of the first thing they notice is the color of their skin or the way they look when you first see them and just getting to know the person a little bit more. Because we are all equal and it's not right.

ReplyDeleteThere are a few types of stereotypes that "they have of us", one example is that they believe we are dangerous. They believe they will get killed with knives these people have hidden on them when they walk through the neighborhood. They also believe these people are stupid because they got "lost" and entered the neighborhood by mistake. The stereotypes "we have if them" is that if they drive into a neighborhood that is not theirs then they would have to roll the window up. That something would happen to them, that they are the dangerous ones know. I believe the author believes these stereotypes come from what people might have heard of or what they believe. I believe that these stereotypes come from people who have walked through neighborhoods that were not familiar and may have had things happen to them. I also believe these stereotypes have come from what they see when they have someone from a different neighborhood walk or drive into theirs and act all scared and suspicious. I believe that stereotyping can be stopped by actually getting to know people before saying these kind of things. We can also stand up when we here people talking about someone they don't even know and tell them how do they know that is true.
ReplyDeleteWhite people, (referred to as they.) have sterotyped blacks (referred to as us.) as dangerous. In the paragraphs above, it states that white people beileve that the blacks will hurt them. White's have become afriad of blacks. Whites probably sterotyped the blacks as dangerous out of fear. Black people in the paragraphs above, sterotype whites as stupid people, who don't belong. Black people have probably sterotyped white people as stupid, because White's treat them like they are all uneducated, or none of them know anything. I think the author says sterotypes come from apperence, based on the paragraph where she describes the men in a hat, the young boy who looks like a grown man, and the man with the crooked eye. Based on everything i know, and have learned about sterotypes, i beileve they come from fear and envy. I think people are sterotyped because people are afraid of other people, or jealous because they have something more. I think sterotypes also come from other people. Kids aren't just born sterotyping people, or born racist, it has to be taught. If people never said things like "Whites are Stupid," or like, "blacks are dangerous." people wouldn't be saying it. I honestly beileve that sterotyping couldn't be stopped. Even if every child, man and woman was bi-racial, or all made the same amouth of money. Sterotyping wouldn't stop because people always want to feel better than others. Sterotyping can't be stopped because everyone always has something to say about someone else culture or someones clothes. Sterotyping will never end.

I think they come from us, because as soon as we see soebody that we haven't met nor know anything about we already havee something on our mind about them. I think stereotyping can't be stopped. It's what one thinks.. Nobody can stop you from thinking things of other people, even thugh we shouldn't until we meet them. Also they might think of us as a bad person just because they think we might say something bad about them, and maybe someone they know got insulted and they think oh so they might say the same thing to us. Well not all of us are like that and I know some of them are not like others. Well we think they are dirty, stupid, lame, and sometimes when its gangs they think they are part of their hometown gang. The stereotypes that they have with the people of mango street is that they think that they are going to harm them,but in reality they aren't. They think that the people on msngo street are going to mob em or steal their stuff. I think the people think they come from A white rich neighborhood where there is no violence. ReplyDeletePeople have different sterotypes of us. For one I know people call us, Mexicans dirty, beggers and lazy. I know for a fact thats not true because, my dad works night and day to make everything possible for us. They also say we don't go all through school, that is not true since both of my brothers are in college and graduating. I think people think of us that way because, some people do act that way. They sit on the street and beg and just wait for things to happen to them so when you see that you believe all people of that race act that way. We think of other people in a stereo typical way too. I've heard that African Americans are rude and don't have any manners but, not everyone is like that I know several that go against that because, it depends on the parents and how they raise them. I also have heard that all blondes are dumb but every blonde I've met have gone trhough college. People put stereo types on others because, of experiencest they had with that specific race and now they think all of them are like that. If we want to stop stereotyping we should start with our selves and not judge people on the first apperence we have of them. Once we deal with our selves we move on with the people around us like our parents, or the children we know. If the kids can stop stereo typing then the future will stop stereotyping. Stereo typing hurts everyone because it effects everyone and should be stopped, because it will and can happen to you.

We are all use to our type, that when we go to a different color neighborhood we look straight ahead and roll up our windows from our cars. I think the stereotypes might come from things that people see in TV. They think just because they saw it in a movie or in a show, they think its true. Another place where stereotype might come from are bad experiences. For example, maybe a family member was murdered by an Asian, African American, Mexican, or a White person, they think that all of their kind are bad people. Based on what I read I believe that the author thinks the stereotypes she described from are from The united states. Based on that statemen a Mexican would know that is a steryotyoe just how we make stereotypes about others. If we wear a certain color, right away they might think we belong somewhere and not here. Just like if someone new comes into our neighborhood and we dont dress appropiatly they might think we might cause problems here.

Well by reading this i think some stereotypes other people have about latinons are that they are mean they think they well steal there things. they dive tho. our neighborhood and roll there window up as up as they can go and dont try not to stare at us in our eyes. ReplyDeletePeople have many stereotypes of Mexicans. They think we're all lazy or immigrants. They think we only listen to Mexican music and we all speak with funny acents. They also think that we all have jobs as maids or anything that has to do with cleaning. There's no shame in having a job like that, but we all don't have those kind of jobs. We aren't the only ones with stereotypes, we have stereotypes of them to. We think all Asians are smart, or all of the Irish are drunks. We also think all of the Asians are quiet and small. The author thinks stereotypes come from what people see are different then them. If so and so is lazy, then all Mexicans are lazy. If so and so are smart, then all Asians are smart. I think that stereotypes do come from what we see is different from are selves. We instantly categorize people from how they are different then us. Then we see people like them, then we think they all are the same and it's not right. We should stop all of the stereotypes we have. It hurts the persons feeling and we don't even stop to real get to know the person. We can stop stereotypes by real getting to know the person. That way we will see that the stereotypes are wrong. We will see that not all Mexicans are lazy. We will stop saying these stereotypes since we will always be disproving them. Sterotypes are something that we can stop.

ReplyDeleteWell, in this story, I see how a couple of steriotypes are used for the inference of the storyline. One of which is how you read when the “ THEY” enters the neighborhood with fear and the will of being attacked. This is a steriotype based comment because you judge the neighborhood folk even before you meet them. You judge a book before you read it. Another strong example of steriotype based commenting is how they talk about how the “ THEY” just entered the new neighborhood without even coming in, by complete mistake. They talk on new folk that enter new places STUPID in a way, because of the first steriotype we read on. That is how this is yet again another steriotype in the making
ReplyDeleteWhere do I believe the author got the steriotypes from? I think I can answer that! She must have gotten all of this info from her own neighborhood when she was probably a child. She saw how new people entered their hood all afraid and looking the other way. This could have functioned this author to use steriotypes as a topic to use in her writing. To show all how she was seen in a neighborhood even before presenting eachother. That is probably how she got all her steriographical content from. But out of all, where do I think she got all of the steriotypes from? Like I said, I think she got all of the steriographical info from her neighborhood, not someone else’s. I say this at the end of the sentence because how would she explain someone else’s hood because she was never there, how could she had known what was going on at the time.
And my final paragraph is will there ever come a point to where steriotyping will stop, no, it will never stop, there will always be someone who will ruin it.
The stereotypes we have of them is that their criminals. That if we come to their neighborhood they will attack with their shiny knifes.What they have of us is that we are lost when we enter their territory. Another thing stated is that we are stupid for being their.The author thinks it comes from being segregated in different neighborhood as she states that when they both enter another neighborhood the get scared of others. I think stereotypes come from years of discrimination and prejudice we have of others. Now I think stereotyping can be stopped if people get to know one another and if we stop living in segregation.

Many such as all chinese people are smart or all white people have alot of money. They also think that all the jobs that we ever get are maids or anything that has to do with cleaning. That not a bad job because I know people that has that job and they really good money. Once you judge someone from there human cover they all think and will say how that person acts or what type of culture there from. everyone has done it once a while like when there a new student in your school or maybe when you have a family member that you have never met in your whole life. Some stereo types are that some people call me short and call me tiny. Well I know I am short but that doesn’t mean that they got to be judging me and telling me that I am short all the time and making fun of me. Also that they feel that their much taller and bigger then me. I think based on my thinking that it is true that went we Mexicans or whites see some black people in our neighborhood .We do get scared and think that they’re going to steal something or do something bad to us or hurt us. When we see an Asian person we think that they would be the smartest person in the world but they could really be the dumbest person. For example, those people would say that we don’t do anything and that we are lazy people. That would be something that they would stereotype us. Another stereotype that they would call us is that they would call us criminals because they think that we would kill people, based on how we look and also think that we steal as criminals. What we have stereotypes to them is that we think that they are ,well some, would look very to them and would look like that when they do something to us. That is what we do when stereotyping them. The author would think that the stereotype would come from them because they would mostly tell us lot of bad things to us. I think that all of the stereotypes would come from everybody since they would discriminate lot of people when problems start. There are ways to prevent stereotyping like talking with different kinds of people to not start anything and doing peaceful things with them to prevent this from happening.

Some stereotypes they have of us is they think we are all immigrants, & they think none of us have a legal right to be here. That we are all lazy, or brown. I think stereotypes are based on prejudice, not rascism. Rascism is when you think you are better than someone, & prejudice is simply pre-judging someone. Rascism, in my opinion, is bad, which would make all stereotypes bad as well, when they are not all bad. Saying blacks are good at basketball, or all tall, is not bad, simply a judgement. & saying Asians are smart is not bad, either, just a judgement, too. But even if they are not bad stereotypes, they can hurt us, bad or not. Meant to hurt our feelings or not. Stereotyping can be stopped the day all of us stop pre-judging, which I do not think can be stopped. People judge, no matter what. They might change their minds when they get to know him, but they still pre-judged in they beginning.
