Bystander Effect

Last week we read a student poem in which the poet wrote as if she was a witness to the events of the Holocaust. The person in the poem choose to just "walk away," even though the person knew that Jews were being mistreated. When someone sees wrong occuring but makes the choice not to act, that is called being a bystander.

The Holocaust is not the only time in which people were bystanders. It is a common thing that all of us have been guilty of at some points in our lives. Here is another example of someone being a bystander.

Assignment
How is the scenario below an example of someone/a group of people being bystanders? Why do you think the assistant principal responded the way he did?

The Richmond High School Incident

It happened the night of October 27, 2009. The girl’s name has not been released, as she was 15 years old at the time, but the accounts of the crime all agree, and it is beyond belief. For 2 and a half hours, while the High School Homecoming Dance was taking place inside the gymnasium, approximately 10 men gang-raped the 15-year-old student, beating her savagely the whole time, all the while 10 others stood around laughing and taking pictures with their cell phones.

The crowd eventually numbered more than 20, and no one called the police. No one went inside to tell a security guard or a policeman, several of which were on campus at the time. A little earlier, the assistant principal looked out his office window and saw 12 to 15 grown men sitting around near the scene of the crime, none of whom had identification badges, as is required, and none of whom appeared to be a teenager, and the assistant principal did not call the police, or alert any teachers or students. He returned to his job and ignored them.

The girl was severly hurt and was left for dead. She was found later by someone leaving the dance.

The scenario is an example of bystanders because there is other students watching and doing nothing about the girl getting ripped.Plus the assistant principal saw those men without badges needed. But because of the men being gangsters and grown[PROBABLY WITH ANY WEAPONS OR GUNS}the assistant with fear of those men attacking more teens. He decided to do nothing and ignore them as well. That's exactly the definition of bystanders.

  2. An example of being a bystander is when the principal sees those people there and he doesnt do anything. Also other people dont do anything ethier.I guess that other people didnt do anything because they were afraid of those people maybe they were scared that they would do something to them if they did something against them. The principle probably thought those people were just there doing no harm. I think he shouldve atleast gone check or something or payed more attention to what was happening.

  3. This is a example of a bystander because while these people beat and rap her people are just standing around taking photos. The people who decided to watch didn't even try to call the police or get someone to stop them. I think the principle acted this way because either he knew what was going to happen and didn`t care or because he might not have known they didn't have badges and thought they were security guards who came to keep the students in order.

I think that this scenario says how bystanders have more cowardly spirit than courage. These people did nothing but laugh and take pictures of this atrocious crime being committed towards this young girl. This gives the word of “BYSTANDER” an even worst example of whom the people are. But out of all, I think that the assistant principal committed a cowardly action, to my expense. He did not even help out by calling the police or helping the girl, he just ignored it. It’s people like that who deserve to grow up and stand up for what they think is correct, and fix it. This is a quality that this principal failed at, severely.

I think this story shows bystanders because like people were just standing there watching this girl laughing taking pictures.Yet none of of them helped her.I think the assistant principal didnt do anything because maybe he thought the schools name will be damaged, and nobody would want to go to that school.

  7. Well the way the principal reacted the way is because the girls were taking pictures with their cellphones. Also she responded that way because some police officers were there in the scene of the crime and they didnt do nothing about it.The principal also didn't called no one because she saw the girl and didn't do nothing so she then went back to her job and ignored anything that happend in the scene of the crime.

the scenario above is an example of a group of people being bystanders by just watching and not reporting the event but some people think its funny but if it was them they would have felt the same thing as the 15 year like the principle

  10. In the scene the group of people are bystanders because while the young girl was getting beat up and gang-raped 10 others just stood there watching, laughing, and taking pictures with their phones. Also the group of people got to 20 and noone had called the police or had went to let security know what was going on. The reason i think the assistant principal responded the way he did is because he probably didn't take much attention to the older men there because maybe they didn't look suspesious. And he thought they were just hanging around just like anyone would. Another thing can be that the assistant principal didn't think something bad can happen when men were just sitting around.

the assistant principal did not call the police, or alert any teachers or students and just went back to him job because he just though that they were just here and he did not want to bother then beause if he dose then they would do somthing about him.

The Richmond High School Incident, is an example of bystanders, because of the way people stood around, watching a crime happen, and did nothing to help, or stop it in anyway. I think the assistant principal acted the way he did out of laziness. Considering the incident took place on school grounds, he should have investigated the scene. He could have responded the way he did because he didn't think anything of it. He could have thought the men were looking at an animal, or just loitering.

  14. WOW:O!!!What the Principal and Persons that were taking pictures and laughing at her was Wrong!!!Those Persons are Such Bystanders at least im glad the Person saw her dead and reported it!! I feel Bad for her:(!!! The Principal should of gone out and said this is A Teenage Home-Coming Dance not an Adult Home-Coming Dance and if they didn't leave he should of called 911 I guess or something!!! But, he had to ignore it I guess he reponded like a Bystander because their is to much man and they can Shoot Him or Beat him up,so I guess that's why he choose to be a Bystander and continued his Worked!!!

  15. This scenario is an example of a group of people being bystanders because while the girl was being beaten and raped to death over 10 people seen this occur and choose not to act. They choose instead to watch laugh and take pictures of the insident. I think that the principal choose to ignore the fact that he seen grown men standing outside because its normal to see people outside of a school and he probably was used to this and saw nothing wrong to stand in a crowd by a school. In my point of view I feel that even though its normal for grown people to be outside he should of went outside to check out what was going on and also I feel that the crowd who just watched this happen should have done something about the situation.

  16. This is an example of being a bystander by 3 reasons. One you watched it all. You know what you had to do. Last you did nothing. Maybe though the principal thought it was just horse play or he just didn't want to be caught being a suspect. Last maybe he just thought someone else would call the police.

Enough people saw the dudes doing that to the girl and noboday did anything. Bystanders just stand and watch others doing something wrong they didnt try to help those sick creeps

  25. In my opinion i think the group of people are bystander because they just looked at the girl gettin beatin and rapped and they dint bother to ask for help or even try to help her. Also another thing is that they become bystander because they watch and laugh at the girl and being all bunched up in a group trying to see and watch. I think the principal did that because he wasnt sure if the people he saw were bad or unprotected. also maybe he dnt tell anyone because they were outside and he probably thought that he was late to save anyone or call the police.

I tihnk that assistant principal responeded the way he did because he was scared. I think that bystander is someone who watches but dont do nothing about it. Like when they were rapping the girl and a crowed of people started to built up.And people watch instead of helping the poor inesant girl. And the assistent of principal could of call the police but she just ignored it and acted like nothimg had happend.

They guys should not of done that becase she was innocent and hade done nothing , these guys just decided to rape her and leave her there when SOMEONE that was looking at her could of called the police and she maybe would of been alive . !! The principal reacted like that maybe because he really dint care or he dint bother to care for her OR he was afraid of the guys, maybe he thought that if he called the police on them the guys were going to hurt him . Sometimes this is a reason why bystandres dont do anything , because they think their going to get hurt .

  30. This was people beging bystanders because alot of people were looking at the girl getting raped and didnt do a thing only one had the courage to call the cops. i think the principle didnt do nothing because he saw how the gang did to the girl. and like say he had family and he called the cops and the gangs have freinds they can call them up and tell them it was him. then they can get his family and do something bad with them. Or even him. which well put his life in resk. so he decide to lave it like that and say nothing and do this job as every other day like nothings wrong.

And the people that got the text message or whatever, they were bystanders because they received something and they didn't bother calling the police or telling them what they had just gotten. Because that was a big deal. It's not for something to watch and ignore.
    I think the principle didn't
call the police because he seen they weren't teenagers and they were grown man he probably got scared to call the police or let the students or the teachers know. Fearing that maybe the man could of done something...

  68. the pincipal did not do anything because he knew that if he calls the police the 10 gang membered people will get revenge. This is also a scenario because when they see people getting beat up when the rest of the people watch they start to laugh at the one who is getting beat up they dont care what happens to the person.finally thats why the pricipal did not do anything because he was scared of the ten gang membered people.

They were beinq like that because they dont care for the student or what was happeninq it was all a joke 2 them. The assistant principle didnt do anythinq because he may have been scared or he may had not really realized what was qoinq on. He should had took action n made sure the students where safe not in danqer. The crowed that qrew biqqer n biqqer where just iqnorent people that didnt care for the student in danqer.

  70. thye kids in the crime were being bystanders and also the principal because many kids were taking it by a joke they were just laughing and taking picture surrounding the area so the adults wouldnt see also no student ran for help to the police or a security guard they all just stay in silent and the princepal was a bystander because he didnt want to call for help because was worried about his high school reputation .

  71. This is an example of a group of bystanders because they saw this girl getting beat up and nobody did anything. They didnt help them beat her up but they didn't do anything about it either. Which i think is very cruel. I believe the vice principal acted this way because she didn't want this to be a big thing and probably ruin the schools reputation. Which i think is very unfair and I dont imagine how these bystanders could live with themselves after witnesing this.

The reason why i think that the principal acted the way that he did was because he probobly didn't care much or think that they would doanything. Either thatorhewas scared that if he told on them, they would turn back on him later. The group of kids didn'tdo anything because they were scared of their own livesaswell and they men might figure out who told on them and get them later. In other words , the bystanderds fear for their lives and in that case, peolpe wouldn't want to risk their lives for some unknow person.

  73. The scenario above is a great example of a bystander. The 10 old bangers watched as while this poor girl was being beaten and raped. The worst part about it was that the "friends" of the bangers took out their phone and took pictures of this girl. The principal acted this way because he thought it would look bad on his school. So he decided to keep his mouth sealed.

From my perspective this is an example of a group of people being bystanders because they didn't care about the girl being abused, they thought it was all a joke but it ended up being something severe like death. I belive that it was terrible for all the witnesess to be bystanders by not doing anything towards trying to help the girl being hurt.
I can't imagine why the assistant principal would ignore such a serious problem. If I was the assistant principal I would have done something to stop it and prevent it from happening again and punish ther abusers and the bystanders because they coukld have made a diffrence between saving her life.

From all the kids that where their did not call the police or even bother doin anything.I think the reason for that was because they didnt want their friends to talk things about them. They probibly though it was funny. And the reason the principal did not do anything when he looked out side his window was because he saw about 12 to 15 people but were not teenagers so that makes him a bystander and for the 12 to 15 people that where their were also bystanders because didnt even bother to call police or security.

  76. They were watching what was happening and they were loughing like it was a joke. They did nothing to help her.i think that the principal didnt do anything beacause he didnt want to cause a big problem more than he allready had going on.He shuld have gone out there and check what was going on out there beacuse thats his job as a pricipal. People are bystanders beacuse they really dont khow the person and they really dont care. Beacause they dont want problems

  77. It is an example because there were 10 men raping the 15 year old girl and they were laughing and taking pictures with their cellphones adn the principal did not do anything.I think that the assistant principal responded the way he did because I think he might of been scared.

The scenario above has a lot of examples of people being bystanders. First of all the first bystanders were in a group. Out of a crowd that got to be up to 20 people no one did anything but stand by and watch instead of telling someone. There was one other bystander which was the assistant principal and he was the worst. He was the adult nobody was watching him. He could have called the police, but he didn't, instead he just ignored the crime. I do not know why an assistant principal, an adult would act like this when he is the witness of a crime committed at his own school.

The scenario is an example of bystanders. For one thing the assistant principal ignored the large amount of adults out in the school ground. In the end it was a large amount. Those who stood and took pictures and the assistant principal who did not report the crime. Now I think the assistant principal did not report this was the fact he might have thought the group were drinking, gang members, or just taking a stole together. I also feel the guy might have been in the crime, or might have just wanted to avoid all the trouble of calling the police.

the scencerio below is an example of a bystander by the jews not doing anything to help themselves. All they try to do is to just stay alive. Another examlpe of being a bystander is when the assistant principle ignored the teens raping the girl in the school yard. No one from the teachers and students called 911 to help her. The principle didnt do anything because he or she tohught that she was going to be okay.

  81. That senario is a example of bystanding because all those people saw that girl in pain and didnt do anything. Even the principal did nothing to help. The people that were bystanding should have got in trouble because all they did was take pictures and laugh and didnt even call the police. And to the girl that died R.I.P

  82. The students that were taking pictures of the girl being are bystanders because they didn’t do anything to help the girl. The assistant principle saw the girl getting rapped is also a bystander and he probably didn’t want to do anything because it would harm the school’s rep. or to not get himself in trouble by interfering.

  83. I the bystander of this situation is that a girl getting raped.I think that bystander is the priniple .The reason I think that the priniple is the bystander because he watched it and dudnt do anything about it. Also because th epriniple didnt try to help the the girl and he didnt.

  84. I THINK BEING BYSTANDER IS WHEN SOME IGNORS WHATS HAPPNING AROUND. LIKE THE PRINCIPAL CHEECK OUTSIDE THE WINDOW AND IGNOR THE YOUNG LADY IN THE FLOOR ALMOST DIEIND. AND NO BODY DID NOTING TO STOP FOR BEATING HER UP.

I think the students watching the crime are bystanders because they saw the girl getting rapped, had the chance to go tell a security or call the cops, but none of them did anything to try and help her. Also the principal was a bystanderbecause he saw the grown men without passes and did not call security or the cops.I think he didin't do anything because he provably thought nothing importrant was going on.

From what I have read from the story of the 15 year old is that an example of bystander when 10 to 12 people would surrond the event taking pictures and laughing. None of them would do anything ,not even calling police.Maybe the assistant principal would respond like that because maybe there would be a group of people just hanging out and maybe that is why the assistant principal would react like that.

  88. i think that the being of bystander is based on a rapped girl ,that has been gone throuhg alot.which they coulnd do anything.which is bad and even though ten guys had raped this poor girl stay qiet.which makesd then a bi stander. the worst thing that they guysdont say nothing and the people that watched are by standers because they didnt do nothing or even call the cops to help the poor girl. the 15 years old girl could of been in good hands if someone calle dthe police so that makes them by standers.

  89. i think the scene and the people were bystanders becouse they were all at the place and scene were the rape was happening and they did not help or go get someone who could help and all they did was stand their taking pictures.that is what i call bystanders.I think that the principal acted that way becouse he did not get to see any thing going on he just saw the men standing there.

  90. I think the assistant principle acted this way because he didnt want no part of it and decided to let one of the students from the dance be an upstander.Or he was just to scared to do anything about. I think the assistant principle should of pushed away the person and save the 15 year old girl.

  91. the bystanders should have called the police or something because i know for a fact that if it was them, they would have wanteed someone to call the police for them. its sad how she got killed because of her own assistant pricniple could do anything,.
