Extra Credit Theme Practice

Read the story below. What do you think the theme is? Explain in one complete paragraph. Be sure to give an example from your life to explain your thinking.

Adapted fom the novel- Call Me Maria

There once was a greedy baker who wanted to charge a starving man for the smell of his fresh-baked goods, aromas which gave the poor manpleasure and hope. He took the beggar to court to make him pay for what he was taking from him. The judge, to everyone's amazement, agreed with the banker. "If a man enjoys the smells of your labor, good panadero, then he must pay you in kind." The judge gave the poor man some coins from his own pocket and called both men to the bench. "Now, my brother, I want you to put those coins in your pocket and jingle them so the baker can hear the sound of money and thus you will settle your debt to the baker.

  1. I think that the theme is that the old man just wanted some of the bakery man so that he won’t starve to death. The old man went to the jugged to tell that he wanted some of the bakery stuff. The jugged gave some of his coins to the old man so that the bakery man will hear the coins from the old man pocket.

It is not fair because the beggar has to pay the baker just for smelling the bread.
This relates to my life because one time when I was smaller my mom took me to flea market and gave me $20.00 so I could by whatever I wanted. So then I went to this one stand. I wanted this lazar that looked really cool. I asked the man how much it cost and he said “$5.00”. I didn’t think the little lazar would be so much. I bought it and went with my mom and told that I had gotten a lazar. She asked me how much it cost? And I told her that it was $5.00. she told me to take her were I had got it from. I took her to the man’s stand and she started to argue with him and it turns out that the guy tried to rip me off but my mom got the right amount of money back.

  3. The theme of the passage is to tell that even though you can’t pay someone with money you can pay them with respect, thank you, or with kindness. An example from my life is when I went to my cousin’s house. When I was ready to leave it was snowing outside and it was super cold and I only had a sweater. He asked me if he wanted to tell his mom to take me home. I couldn’t pay him with money because I didn’t have it at the time. I just could have said thank you.

  4. I think because he looked poor he was not going to buy anything. So he make a big deal with something so small. People that are greedy make mistakes. Because one time when I was little every one threat me bad because I was fat. Every one laugh and joke. I try to prove myself and they make me minus they did not took me to tournament that time. I was left out till I prove myself I was always nice to them but they ignore me. My mom told me to not fight but they they hit me like a soccer ball. I was start to train till I got better I show them if you want something fight for it. People no-this that don't judge a book by it covered.

  5. I think the theme of the story is that don’t be so greedy because then you might not get anything. One time my cousin brought a big bag of chips but she didn’t share with me or her sister which got us mad. After she got in trouble with her mom so she took her chips away and gave them to us. She got mad but she was sorry that she didn’t share so we shared the chips with her so she knows were not greedy too.

the baker was greedy who wanted to charge a starving man for the smell of his fresh baked goods and he was starving so much so he will died if he doesn't have food. I will help that guy to get money if i have a lot like my brother and i have money and it is in the bank with my to brothers and i will asked them can i have money for this poor person so he can have food to buy. then i will say wow that's a lot of money there in your hand.

  7. I think never do somthing to someone if you do not want them to do it to you. That is the theme of the story. The man got to pay the same way as the baker got to give his smells, with just sounds of money.

The theme is about don't judge people because they not able to buy or even do what you can do. Like one time my mom and making gelatin and then she went to the bathroom and I was just sniffing it but she thought I was eating it so she yelled "no that is for the New Year party that we were going to." Then thought she wouldn't be able to make it again and we would miss the trip on the metra. but I did not eat it, I was just smelling how good it smelled. So you shouldn't think until you see it for sure.

  9. the massage of the story is that if there is a hungry person and has no money you should give him something to him if he is realy hungry and has no money this reminds my of a homeless person me and my family, no people wanted to help him so from all the money collected i gave all of it to him that made him happy and then he went to the store for some food and a good blanket, I was so happy for the man

  17. The theme of this story is that if someone likes your work you must pay them kindness, not make them pay for liking whatever you do. So let's say people like your writing you pay them with good writing and they don't pay you for reading your story instead they try to settle off the debt by giving good feedback.

The judgr said now your even. This reminds me of when I had ice cream I my sister did not. I was teasing her by eating it right in front of her. Then when I was done with my ice cream my mom gave my sister a big brownie because she knew I like brownies better, and my sister ate it right in front of me too.

What I think about this picture is that, no one should make fun of this picture because one day you will also live this life just like that person wearing a bottle of water or whatever it can be, and you can end up been without nothing even worse than this person. So I think no one should make fun of it or judge that person. You can judge them when you take care of them, give them food, and or if you give them money. Will even though you still can’t judge them, for my opinion.

  28. I think never judge a person until you walked in their shoes means that they are smart because it’s the only thing the have because people might not have money to buy some so the use their intelligence to make some or use whatever they this sword of like when you have lemons you make lemonade so for the people who are poor and need a pair a shoes the use what they can cause they are in need and I think the people who judge those persons are kind of dumb cause they have and the poor people don’t so they use their intelligence

What I mean is that in the the story the old man is being charged by a greedy guy that just wants his money, but the judge helps him out by giving him money to pay the baker.
It’s like the time when a woman was needed money for liposuction and I thought that is what she get for being so overweight but I still gave her $20 dollars.

In the story I just read I think that the theme of the story is not to be such a harsh person with people that don’t have any money, don’t judge the person that’s right in front of you because their poor. I remember seeing an old man asking for money outside a corner story to a person when that person seen him get near him he called the cops because he thought he was going to rob him. But it was false alarm he just wanted to ask for money.

The theme of this paragraph was that the baker wanted money for his bread and the person who like how it smelled and baked didn’t want to pay him back. The baker took that thing to the judge and he agreed. Well the actual theme of this paragraph is that if you speak up you would never accomplish what you want or believe. I had this 1 times happen to me. I was at the store and my mom told my mother that he can buy he’s toy but he had to buy it with his own money. I thought it was unfair because my brother only got 5 dollars a week by my grandpa, but he never gave any to me or my older sister.
“Mom do you like how I clean right?” I told her.
“Well you clean better then your sister,” she told me.
“Then if I clean everyday would you give ME money so I can get something I want,” I said having little of hope.
“Um ok well try it but you have to start tomorrow,” mu mom said.
“You would get a dollar each day.”
“Okay mom I will,” I told her.
The next day I forgot all about the whole thing and never did it.
