WWII Poem

Read the poem below. It was dedicated from one WWII soldier to another. What do you think the theme of the poem is? Explain and give at least one example from the poem in your answer. MY BUDDY They say he died in glory, What ever that may be. If its dying in a burst of flame, Then glory's not for me. In the briefing room this morning, He sat with clear eyes and strong heart, Just one of many airman Determined to do his part. My buddy had the guts alright, He sought not glory nor fame. He knew there was a job to do, My crew all felt the same. But death had the final word, In its log it wrote his name. For my buddy died this afternoon In glory - in a burst of flame. (Dedicated to Mike Shanley who gave his life ditching on his 6th mission)

  1. I think the poem means that they all probably will die but they got a job to accomplish and it didn’t matter how they’ll go down, but the only thing that matters for them is not going out in fame or glory but to do the job they had to do. “But death had the final word”

I think the theme is loss with sorrow, it's a poem of life and death, and of course, loosing someone you care deeply about. (In this case, him)

What the poem is trying to say is that a man gave up his life. He did all that because of his country that means that he really liked his country to fight over it, and even worse died over it. Which I think is really nice because I know that nobody that is brave, would ever risked their life for our country.

  9. I THINK THAT THE THEME OF THIS POEM IS HOW THE MAN DIED IN SUCH TRAGEDY BUT IT IS GLORIOUS AT\ THE SAME TIME BECAUSE HE WILL ALWAYS BE REMEBERED AS A GREAT MAN. WHATS THIS MEANS IS THAT EVEN THOUGH HE DIED IN A BAD WAY HE WILL BE GOING UP TO GOD!!!

I think this theme is about how according to the poem the buddy was determined to do his part and he had guts he sat there with clear eyes and strong heart. He was determined to die and .On the poem it states that he knew there was a job to be done death was had the final word the buddy died on his 6 mission. This theme is about he died in battled and he was so ready and determined he sat there with glory and strong heart and proud to finish the job with honor. I think that’s what the theme is about in this poem about his friend that died. According to the poem the crew felt the same what the buddy felt guts of glory and to get the job done. Also in the poem it states that if it’s dying in a burst of flame then glory’s was not for me. I think what that means that he wasn’t ready to die not like how his buddy felt. His buddy was full of heart to die but he wasn’t he die in his 6 mission. I think that’s all this WWII poem was about and what it means.

  11. The them of this poem is friend ship. The poem says " For my buddy died this afternoon in glory- in a burst of flame". The them is friend ship because he is talking about how he lost his friend and that he wish that he was still alive. And that he died because he knew he had to get his job done.

  12. The theme of the poem is saying that the narrator's buddy died and that he was not trying out for the KIA (Killed in Action) because he sought nor glory nor fame. The narrator says that if that was glory it is not for him. From his point of view and vocabulary you can tell that they were close friends. Who knows what country they're from. The narrator saw his buddy steady and strong but in the end death had taken over his buddy. The burst of flame could be bombs or it could be the representation of hell. Either way to me it looks as if they were Jews. But if they are in an army than it couldn't be. Anyway, the theme ends up being the solemn mood of the narrator as he lost his buddy that afternoon.

I think the theme to this poem is that a lot of people do things in the world and other people don't know it and they are not thankful for what they did. This poem is talking about a friend that was a soilder and his friend died and he feels sad and he doesn't talk about anyone else that feel the same except his crew.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think this a sad but admiring because he wrote about a friend (or in this case a buddy) that died in flames and actually took the time to write and dedicate the poem to him. He let his feelings out in that poem saying “If its dying in a burst of flame, Then glory's not for me” so he is saying that if he was in a burst in flames he did not deserve glory. Not many people would dedicate a poem to a soldier they usually dedicate a quote

I think that the point of this poem is taking about death. This poem uses death to explain how Mike Died. This poem mainly talks about death though, and what I think about it is that it's a very deep poem. The poem is about his "Buddy", and how he died. It states that he died in flames, and how this was not his glory at all. All I have to say is that I like how the perosn explains a little bit of what he fealt when his friend died, and I bet that person felt lost. And I also think thats why he wrote this peom, to talk about how he felt. This makes me think of how soldiers die. They die, wanting to defeat their enemies and save their country. Instead, they die in the wanting to save their people. So, all in all, the point of this poem is the death of a good friend.

the theme of this poem was probably about a soldier that died for a good cause. now his friend is writing this poem in his honor and he keeps saying MY BUDDY so they were most likely close friends and his friend gave up his life for something and he is saying that he didnt do for fame or glory but just because he had the guts and was a brave soldier like it said in the poem.

The theme of the poem above is that though you know something bad might happen to you in the end, standing up and doing something about what believe in is always the right thing to do.Like his buddy in the poem he gave up his life to save his mission. Unless your a coward stand up for what you believe in, in his case he might have died anyway but he chose to go dowm like a real hero. As for his friend the one that wrote the poem, why is he making fun of a person that just saved his life. that person is true coward because he ditched his own crew to save himself. What type of airman is that, in fact if he is going to ditch why did he volunteer to protect us.And what did he expect to accomplish with this poem, worshipper? No one likes a coward.

Also i think this poem is sad because its talking about someone dying in the war. Also i think its bravery because it says he sat with a strong heart and how his buddy had guts. Also i think its about bravery because he gave his life up in the war. Also how he says dying in the war is glory to the guy. So i think that is why the theme is bravery and death.

I think the theme of this poem is a man remembering that his friend died and gave his life defending this country and honoring him for it. An example is “My buddy had guts alright, He shot not for glory nor fame”. This means that he honored what his friend did and respects him dearly for it. Another example is “In the briefing room this morning , He sat with clear eyes and strong heart , Just one of many air man determined to do his part”. This is telling the reader what the poet thought of his friend who gave his life to save his country.

I think that the theme of the poem, “My Buddy” was that even if the soldier died it could be said that he died in glory because he died because of doing something that everyone was proud or something good which was fighting and risking his life in World War Two. In the poem it says, “They say he died in glory, Whatever that may be”. This shows how the soldier who wrote this poem does not really get why they say this because he is too fighting for other people and country and maybe he doesn’t really think that people are proud of him so he doesn’t really get why they say that if for him it was a tragic death of a friend he loved. ):

I think that the theme is to try your best before you die. One example is "My buddy had the guts alright, He sought not glory nor fame." This shows that he tryied his best to do something not for something for himself.

The theme of this poem was to be brave for the greater good. It is because the man gave his life for his people. He didn't think twice he just did it. He knew what he was doing and wanted to do it. He knew ot would help his contry so that gave him cause. This man was brave enough to give his life for the greater good and for his own people. That is why doing things for the greater good is the theme.

  83. I thinck that the person that wrote the poem is sad about it. But everyone thincks he did all the work but it was the poeple that gave their lives. So the writer is saying that the people that died deserve their credit.

  87. The theme of this poem is to do something that you wanted to do, before you die. So complete what you were gonna do.An example is ("he knew their was a job to do")Another one is ("who gave his life ditching on his 6th mission")And that can tell you that he died for doing his job or while doing it.So theirs this soldier that had a friend, and his friend dies in the war, (in a burst of flame). He died while giving a life to someone else, and while doing his job that he wanted to do with no fear.

  88. I think that the theme for this poem is that you should always do your part cause you die with glory and you don’t need to get famous for this but you know you did a very good job. Especially if you are a soldier in World War 2 you need to know that you are doing your part for your country.

  89. The theme of this poem is about a guy that was a soldier and he gave his live and everything he had to the WWII and both friends meant a lot to each other. I knew this because it said “He died in glory” and that you say when you were really good with each other and you say well for the person who passed away. Also I know that this happened because he gave everything for his job because it states, “He knew there was a job to do, My crew all felt the same”. That is why I think that is the theme of the poem.

I think the theme is that you should always do the job or work you were told to do rather than to set it aside and not even try. Also this man was giving this poem to tell that his friend didn’t do what was told to be done but it didn’t mean that he had to have death to repay for his laziness.

The theme is to do your job and and if you die you at least doing it. An example is, “he knew there was a job to do, ". the second one is "in the briefing room this morning, He sat with clear eyes and strong heart, Just one of many airman Determined to do his part" and that’s my response

I think it means that his friend is brave and died in glory."But if dying in glory means that same fate than that is not the life for me." I think this poem means thay when his friend was in the war he was brave and had a heart so he burst into flames so that is glory.
