Life is filled with "small moments"

I wrote a personal narrative that I’d like to share with you. It’s about when my car broke down yesterday in the school parking lot.

Yesterday, when I was leaving the school parking lot my car could go forward, but not backward. Then, all of a sudden, it worked! I drove out of the parking lot and down the street. Then, it made an odd noise and it stopped, right in the middle of the road. I quickly called for a tow truck.

It’s a good personal narrative, isn’t it? Now. Look at this next one. It is the same story, but I added in my reactions and feelings. See if you can notice what is different about the writing of this small moment.

Yesterday, when I was leaving the school parking lot, I noticed my car was acting strangely. It could go forward, but not backward. I was worried. Then, all of a sudden, it worked! I drove out of the parking lot and down the street. What a relief! Then, it made an odd noise. Thump! It stopped, right in the middle of the road. I was so upset, I thought I might cry. “What am I going to do now?” I thought. I quickly called for a tow truck.

I want you to think about including these two things in your writing. Remember that in order to get the highest score possible for a narrative, you need to have these types of character reactions and feelings. Retell a small moment paying close attention to character reactions and feelings.

Storytelling in Reverse

You are going to be writing another short narrative today. Anytime that you have to write a timed narrative, I want you to structure the story a little differently. I want you to just focus on having a clear theme that you explain, a story that progresses through time (it has a balanced beginning, middle, and end), and your characters reacting to events that happen in the story (example: If there was a murder in your story, share your characters thoughts about the murder).

For this writing assignment, everyone has to end their stories with the following sentence:


From that point on, he felt happier than he could ever imagine.


Other than that, you are free to be as creative as you want. Happy writing!

Storytelling Using Prepositions

Using as many words as you can from your preposition list, continue writing the following story:



Once upon a time, I woke up in a place I've never been before.



I have given you the first line to your story; you need to continue it. Be sure that you have all of the elements of plot (exposition, rising action, a climax, and falling action). Also, try one of the endings that we discussed in class (if we haven't gotten to that in your class, don't worry).

What do we do when we are let down?

In two paragraphs, I want you to describe a time in which someone disappointed you and how you handle disappointments today. In the first paragraph, I want you to detail how that individual disappointed you and how you felt. You need to use the past tense in this paragraph. In the second paragraph, I want to focus on how you handle disappointments today. You need to use the present tense in this paragraph. Also, please make good use of your trasition list.

How do you brush your teeth?

Using as many words as you can from your transitions list, share how you brush your teeth. Be detailed and go through each step! Start with waking up. Use at least 5 transitions.
